Red blood cells contain the protein haemoglobin, which is responsible for oxygen transport in the body. Among other things, haemoglobin needs iron and copper to transport oxygen efficiently in the body. The higher the number of red blood cells, the more oxygen the body can absorb from the lungs. Increased oxygen uptake means that the body gets a greater amount of oxygen-rich blood to the muscles, increasing their ability to work aerobically, i.e. the lactic acid threshold (lactate threshold) is shifted.
